After London made my head implode at the end of the last millennium I opted for a quiet life in a tiny cottage in West Wales. Where I have lived happily ever since with my cats, dogs, goats, horse, imaginary fish... and now my step kids, wife and baby daughter! Not so quiet now :o)

When we got a free view box a couple of years ago it quickly turned into a nightmare of endless repeats and zombied out children. Talk about 57 channels and nothing on.

Three months ago the wife and I got so desperate we actually disconnected all the TV equipment in the house and stashed it away in an attempt to get our children back. Fortunately at the same time we were finally allowed to have broadband and this opened up the possibility of an alternative.

You could argue that they are now zombied out in front of the computer instead, but to my mind the internet is a far more proactive place to be than passive viewing.

The girls can still watch their favourite TV shows and it is easier to switch off the computer than the TV when things get a bit too brain dead.

I don't think we will ever need TV again and the girls certainly haven't missed it. There have even been days when they go out side and play!

I am considering not getting a TV licence next year, but since it also pays for the BBC website and BBC Iplayer I might just keep it.

Anyway thumbs up for BBCi and the internet thumbs down to traditional television, the future is here and it includes our kids having a life beyond TV.

Tragic Roundabout. These guys played for us back in the days my mum and I ran music stages at festivals. As stage manager it was one of my jobs to let the bands know when it was time to wrap things up, did these guys want to leave the stage? Hell no! In the end we convinced them to jump down and carry on playing in the crowd so we could set up for the next act.

Talk about totally bonkers anarchistic music. Their mad. Their mad. Their madder than Mad Jack McMad the winner of last year's Mr Madmen competition.

Ten years on they don't seem to have clamed down one jot. Jolly Good!

hmmm this reminds me of a cross between Tragic Roundabout (but not so crazy) and Radio Head (not so depressing). Right up my street.
